Preparing for Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Weight Loss Surgery Mexico

It’s normal to be jittery before a surgery. However with prior preparation you can be slightly at ease. Remember that most doctors consider this form of weight loss surgery safer than other forms because there is no insertion of foreign element as in lap band surgery or redirection involved as in gastric bypass. All in all this is a laparoscopic procedure with very little discomfort. Remember that you are in one of the world’s best hospitals with a very good and experienced surgeon and an equally good backup staff.

Here are some pre operative preparation instructions for vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery.

You will need to be on an Atkins diet two weeks pre operatively to reduce fat from around your liver.

You must be on clear liquids 48 hours prior to your surgery.

Ideally the day before you fly you should purchase Colyte or magnesium citrate and drink it per instructions to cleanse your colon, after the cleansing you may only have clear liquids!    If you choose not to do the bowel cleanse – you may simply go on a clear liquid diet 4 days pre-operatively.

You may take needed medications (such as heart or blood pressure medications) the day before surgery

Do not take any aspirin, Advil, Nuprin, Aleve or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for 7 days prior to surgery. These medications cause unnecessary bleeding after surgery. This includes baby aspirin and most arthritis medications. If you are not sure, please check with our doctors.. For headache or minor pains you may use Tylenol. You may restart these medications the next day after surgery.

If you have a certain medical condition that needs need anticoagulants which must be stopped or changed before surgery you need to ask your regular Doctor under whose treatment you are for the condition how to do it.

Do not take any herbal medications for 7 days prior to surgery.

Bring comfortable shoes and slippers to Mexico, you will be asked to walk several times per day. Walking helps in healing and recovery. To learn more about gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico click on the link.
