Also known as RNY gastric bypass surgery, roux-en-y surgery is the most common form of laparoscopic surgery. As opposed to lap band surgery, which artificially limits the size of a patient's stomach, RNY gastric bypass surgery bypasses sections of the stomach and small intestine. Therefore less food is absorbed into your system.

RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery - a Brief Walk-through

The stomach is surgically divided in two, creating a small pouch that will act as the "new" stomach
Staples seal both the "old" and "new" stomachs
The small intestine is disconnected from the "old" stomach, which is sealed by staples
The new stomach is safely connected by staples to the detached small intestine
