Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass - Pre and Post Op Care

LAPAROSCOPIC GASTRIC BYPASS- PRE OP INSTRUCTIONS

You will need to be on an Atkins diet two weeks pre operatively to reduce fat from around your liver.

You must be on clear liquids 48 hours prior to your surgery.

Ideally the day before you fly you should purchase Colyte or magnesium citrate and drink it per instructions to cleanse your colon, after the cleansing you may only have clear liquids!    If you choose not to do the bowel cleanse – you may simply go on a clear liquid diet 4 days pre-operatively.

You may take needed medications (such as heart or blood pressure medications) the day before surgery

Do not take any aspirin, Advil, Nuprin, Aleve or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for 7 days prior to surgery. These medications cause unnecessary bleeding after surgery. This includes baby aspirin and most arthritis medications. If you are not sure, please check with our Drs.. For headache or minor pains you may use Tylenol. You may restart these medications the next day after surgery. (Certain medical conditions need anticoagulants which must be stop or changed before surgery you need to ask your Dr in the states how to do it)

Do not take any herbal medications for 7 days prior to surgery.

Bring comfortable shoes and slippers to Mexico, you will be asked to walk several times per day.

Please bring your medications in properly labeled pharmaceutical bottles for documentation of dosages.

LAPAROSCOPIC GASTRIC BYPASS- POST SURGERY DIET INSTRUCTIONS

THE GASTRIC BYPASS DIET

Welcome to your new eating lifestyle! Your gastric bypass diet is used in conjunction with the gastric bypass surgery in order to obtain weight loss. Diet modification is very important after surgery in order to:

  1. Prevent pain and vomiting due to blockage of the opening from the stomach.
  2. Achieve and MAINTAIN the desired weight loss.
  3. Remain nutritionally healthy.

DIET TIPS FOR YOUR NEW EATING LIFESTYLE

Do not drink fluids with your meals. Save them 30 minutes before or after you eat solid foods. Remember your stomach is very small. you will have to judge when to stop eating according to how full you feel. This is why it is important to EAT SLOWLY. to help you eat slowly: Eat from small utensils such as a baby size spoon, small dishes and small cups. A warming tray may be helpful to keep foods warm while you are eating. Sip-Do not gulp. Take one bite of solid food, put your utensil down and chew until mushy consistency. Then slowly begin aging. For patients with poor dentition, please see your dentist prior to surgery, due to the need to thoroughly chew foods. Allow 20 minutes of eating time for each meal. STOP EATING AS SOON AS YOU FEEL FULL. Your 1-once pouch relates to the consistency of food, not amount. Softer, easily digested food will move through and be tolerated over ones that require more digestion. Try to avoid vomiting. Reasons for vomiting include: eating too fast, overeating, eating foods too large or bulky to pass through the small dime-size intestine, and being intolerant to a certain food, especially breads, heavy meats or bulky vegetables.

During the first 6 months after surgery, avoid the following: doughy breads (it is better to eat thinly sliced wheat toast) tough fruit/vegetable skins, coconut, fibrous meats, hard boiled eggs.

Drink at least six cups of fluid or more between meals. Recommended fluids: skim milk, unsweetened fruit juice, vegetable juice(such as V-8 juice or tomato juice) in addition to water, tea, coffee, etc. Sip beverages slowly. Average is six ounces per 30 minutes.

Try to avoid sugar and fats. You may use sugar substitute or fructose(fruit sugar) in place of sugar, and Molly McButter, Butter Buds, or Best of Butter in place of margarine to season your foods. More detail will be given to this subject later in this booklet.

If you develop vomiting or retching due to food that seems lodged in your stomach, try the following recipe:

½ teaspoon Adolph’s meat tenderizer
1 Teaspoon lemon juice
4 ounces (1/2 cup) tap water
Mix well. Sip over one hour.

THE DUMPING SYNDROME

Sugar and concentrated sweets may cause the dumping syndrome.
This condition occurs when food is dumped from the stomach into the small bowel rather than being gradually released in small amount. Symptoms usually occur between 10-20 minutes after eating a food with concentrated sugar. Dumping symptoms include abdominal fullness, nausea, cramping, abdominal pain, diarrhea, warmth, dizziness, weakness, faintness, racing pulse and cold sweat.

THE IMPORTANCE OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS

Vitamins and minerals perform many specific and individual functions. They do not provide energy in the sense of calories, but they are important in maintaining the function of the cells in your body. In some instances problems can occur if you become deficient in a vitamin or mineral. To prevent this from happening you should use the “Four Food Groups Guide” and be sure to include enough protein in your diet to assure that you are meeting your vitamin and mineral needs. The following are examples of problems which may occur if you are not getting sufficient protein, vitamins or minerals:

Indefinite blood testing of the following is strongly recommended:
CBC, B12, Flotate, Serum Iron, Calcium, Serum, Albumin, Alkaline, phosphates.

YOUR NEW LIFETIME EATING HABITS
THE MAINTENANCE DIET
Your gastric bypass surgery is not a miracle cure. It is important that you maintain nutritious eating habits to help you KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF.
